Selena Gomez's Odd Secrets To Staying Healthy

Selena Gomez has been very open about her health struggles in the past. She was diagnosed with lupus a few years ago, which lead to anxiety and depression struggles causing her to step away from the spotlight in the last few months. She accepted an award for Favorite Female Artist at the American Music Awards and gave a really emotional speech about her health. Now she's opened up to ELLE about how she's staying healthy and if we're being honest, it's pretty bizarre! 

Selena's acceptance speech at this year's American Music Awards had us in tears. She said, "I think it’s safe to say that most of you know a lot of my life—whether I liked it or not—and I had to stop. ’Cause I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside." She added, "If you are broken, then you do not have to stay broken.”

Staying as healthy as she can is really important to Selena, and she opened up to ELLE Magazine about how she does just that. 

She admitted that sticking to a strict gym schedule is just not her thing. "I'm horrible at discipline when it comes to working out. I'm one of those people who's like, 'Ah, I ran for five minutes. I think I'm good.'"

You're definitely not alone there girl. 

She brought her personal trainer, Amy Rosoff Davis, on the road with her, who is constantly giving her the motivation she needs when she's just not feeling like exercising. 

"I wanted to be healthy; I wanted to feel good. I just wanted to make sure I was the best I could be for the show and for my fans," she said. 

She said that she finds that hiking and using her pilates machine are great ways to work out. 

A pretty unique thing she does to stay healthy and focused is wrapping herself up in a sweat bed. She explained, "have a sweat bed, which looks like a burrito that I wrap myself up in, and I sweat for about 45 minutes."

She explained that you wear a sweatsuit and then get wrapped up for about 45 minutes while your body releases toxins. It's pretty similar to a sauna she says, and claims that it's totally changed her skin. 

"I know it sounds gross, but you just sit in your sweat for an hour and don't immediately shower because there's natural collagen in your toxins that actually makes your skin feel softer before you wash it all off," she said. 

When it comes to staying healthy and hygienic on tour, Selena says that she doesn't wash her hair every day – in fact it's totally okay to let it get a little dirty.

She's right, by the way. Washing it every day strips away the natural oils you want in your hair!

She's also not huge on wearing makeup, and is pretty chill when it comes to getting pimples even if she has a red carpet event or photoshoot. 

"Life is life. If it's a photoshoot, I'm probably more lucky because Photoshop, and if it's a close up, I have to have makeup, and I just kind of do it. You can't really fight it," she explained.
